- Compare and Contrast- Use two books about the same story but told in different ways. Have students write their own versions of a story. Then compare and contrast their story to the original.
- Simile, Metaphor, Personification, Hyperbole- Mentor texts can also be used for teaching different types of figurative language.
Creative Writing can be brought into other subjects
- Science- A first-person account of a major volcanic eruption, such as Mount St. Helens, including all relevant scientific details, the type of volcano, the nature of the eruption, the damage done, and so on.
- Math- Rewrite a fairy tale using math that they had learned. This article includes this idea along with a rubric to help guide students, and the article includes other ideas.
- Social Studies- Have students create a newspaper article with real facts and stories created based on real events. An example event that you could use is the Boston Tea Party.
